Historical Context

During Sadeh, Mobads in white garments recited from the Avesta, people danced, and the story of King Hushang discovering fire was narrated. This coincidence shows that performance was an integral part of Persian festivals.

Persian theatre dates to approximately 641-1000 BCE. Naqqali (storytelling with music and dance), women dancing in praise of Anahita, and symbolic rituals with masks and music are ancient Persian performance genres.
