Historical Context
The Shahnameh played a fundamental role in preserving the Persian language. Ferdowsi consciously avoided Arabic words, using ancient Persian and Pahlavi vocabulary. This work preserved Iranian cultural identity against cultural invasion.

Ferdowsi spent 30 years composing the Shahnameh. This work contains approximately 50,000 couplets and narrates Iran's mythological and heroic history from creation to the Arab conquest.
