Accession of Darius I

Mehr 1

Darius I stabilized power after crushing the revolt of Gaumata (the false Bardiya) and fighting 19 battles in one year. He divided the empire into 20 satrapies, minted the gold Daric coin, and established the Chapar postal system praised by Herodotus.

Fun Facts

Darius recorded his rise to power in the Behistun Inscription (Kermanshah) in three languages (Old Persian, Elamite, Babylonian)—this inscription became the key to deciphering cuneiform. Herodotus wrote that Darius was called 'the shopkeeper' because of his focus on economy and taxation. He was the first Persian king to write his name in Old Persian cuneiform.
