Mehr 20

On the 16th of Tishri (around 15-20 Mehr), Persian forces under Gobryas (Ugbaru) entered Babylon without battle. Nabonidus, the last Babylonian king, fled, and the city surrendered peacefully. This peaceful conquest marked a turning point in world history.

Fun Facts

Herodotus wrote that Persians diverted the Euphrates River to enter the city. The conquest was bloodless as Babylonians were weary of Nabonidus's rule. Lydia, Egypt, and Babylon had allied to attack Persia, but Cyrus defeated them with preemptive defense.
