Shapur captured Roman Emperor Valerian at the Battle of Edessa in 260 CE—the only time a Roman emperor was captured in battle! His Naqsh-e Rostam relief shows him on horseback with Valerian kneeling. Shapur granted religious freedom to all, and the prophet Mani was welcomed at his court.
