Since 1960, December 16 (25 Azar) was celebrated as Mother's Day, marking the anniversary of the Mothers and Infants Protection Society founded in 1940 by Reza Shah's decree.

In ancient Iranian culture, Women's and Mother's Day coincided with Esfandgan on Esfand 5. Spandarmad (Spenta Armaiti) is the female Amesha Spenta guardian of earth, symbolizing devotion and humility. The Mothers and Infants Protection Society was one of Iran's first women's welfare organizations.
