Legend says when Mahmud's reward finally arrived, Ferdowsi's coffin was being carried out of the city gate! He wrote at the end of Shahnameh: 'I took this auspicious book as a good omen / I suffered much over many years.' His tomb in Tus is visited by millions annually.
