The Qalichooyan (carpet washing) ceremony of Ardahal, Kashan - a remnant of ancient Tirgan festival. People carry carpets and kilims from the shrine to the spring and wash them with sacred water. This ritual is inscribed on UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Historical Context

The Qalichooyan ritual has roots in the ancient Tirgan festival connected to water and rain. After Islam, this ritual became linked to a narrative about Sultan Ali, who is said to have been martyred at this location. Soleimanieh spring is located in the village of Mashhad Ardahal.

This ritual was inscribed on UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2012. Qalichooyan is held every year on the second Friday of Mehr. People enthusiastically carry carpets from the shrine of Sultan Ali to Soleimanieh spring and wash them with water splashing and prayers.
