Historical Context

On April 30, 1622, Imam Qoli Khan, with British assistance, recaptured Hormuz Island from the Portuguese, ending 117 years of Portuguese dominance over the Persian Gulf.

Fun Facts

The Persian Gulf has been recorded by this name in historical documents since Achaemenid times. In ancient Greek, Roman, and Islamic maps, it was always called "Persian Gulf" or its equivalent.
