Akhavan-Sales was born in Mashhad and chose 'Omid' (Hope) as his pen name. His famous poem 'Winter' symbolizes disillusionment after the 1953 coup. He loved the Shahnameh and Pahlavi language, reviving many archaic words in his poetry. His 'End of the Shahnameh' is a masterpiece of contemporary Persian literature.
