On January 8, 2020, the IRGC shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 with two surface-to-air missiles. All 176 passengers and crew were killed. 82 victims were Iranian and 57 were Canadian citizens.
Historical Context
Flight PS752 took off from Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport at 6:12 AM, bound for Kyiv. Two minutes after takeoff, two Tor-M1 surface-to-air missiles were fired at the aircraft. The Islamic Republic lied for three days, claiming the plane suffered a technical failure. After videos of the missile strike surfaced, the regime was forced to admit the truth. This crime occurred hours after Iran launched missiles at a US base in Iraq.
Fun Facts
The Ontario Superior Court of Canada ruled in 2024 that the downing was intentional and an act of terrorism. Many victims were students and professors at Canadian universities returning from holiday visits. The Islamic Republic never accepted full responsibility and no one was punished.
